5K PR

So this past weekend I ran in the Race for the Cure 5K and set a new 5K PR-20:45.  I was shooting for a sub 20:00, but still PRed by 14 seconds.  The ‘funny’ part is I haven’t really trained enough to PR, but I did it anyway.  I think…. that means I have another PR in me with some training.

I studied my heart rate for the 5K, and reviewed the past 5 training runs and here’s what i found.  My heart rate doubles from the start to 1/2 mile point. Then slowly rises close to 100% from there.  I really think the mental part of racing fast, or should I say the key to running/racing fast is as much mental as physical.  The pain is going to be there- 5K, 10K 13.2 or 26.2. Its HOW you mentally deal with the pain that limits your ability.  Training does play a key role though.  You have to train into the PAIN.  Mentally you have to know “this hurts and I can handle it. I’ve trained in this pain and I know I can endure it for another…3, 5, 10 or 20 more miles.  With proper training, your body will keep going- So you have to keep your mind focused on the goal.

I know there are limits, but that’s where the ‘pain train’ comes in.  I’ll be the first to say “I hate training, but I love racin’.”  It’s all in moderation.  I know I have to train to get the physical part AND the mental part.

In the second half of 2007 my mental training has really grown, as evidence in this weekend’s 5K PR.  There is no way I physically trained enough to PR, but mentally I was ready.  That gives me hope to run faster when I get committed to more training.

Little ‘Ol 3.1

MH and I ran 3.1miles this morning. WOW.  After running IN the Chicago Marathon, this was our first run after the big RACE.  It felt great!  I can’t wait till Sat when we run the Race for the Cure.  my first 5K in a while.  I’m looking to PR and run a 20:30 or so.  We’ll see

The Chicago ‘Marathon’

Well… Kelly, Mike and I ran IN the Chicago marathon as opposed to RUNNING the Chicago Marathon.  They (Race Organizers) closed the course.  Mike made it in and did the whole thing.  Kelly and I got in 19.5+-.  I’m disappointed in the race. Not on our performance, but the fact we didn’t get to complete the race.  All our training or the lack thereof, we for… something.  We were running our race and had it in us to finish, but that wasn’t our choice.  I understand what the race directors did and it was a good idea for some, but not us.  If they offer a partial refund, who cares? The $$$ we spent to enter ($110) was nothing.  We did raise over $1000 for TSA, but we didn’t get to experience the Race in the manor in which we wanted to. I’m sure I learned a bunch and will think back to this race often, but right now I don’t really feel that I learned anything about running or racing. Patience, understanding, and so on. I know that and didn’t really want to ‘learn’ more on a $$$$ trip. Sometimes you race, sometimes you run, and sometimes you do what THEY will let you and accept it. Ok, time to move on. Zoom Zoom,
